Chrome Market Share Stats from General Internet Users

Google introduced its web browser Chrome on Tuesday of last week. Search marketers and other Internet workers immediately downloaded the browser and took it for a test spin. Within days of the introduction, search marketing blogs started reporting a rapid adoption rate based on the numbers of time visitors to their websites or blogs used Chrome as a browser. Predictably, the numbers were quite high showing promise of a quick growth curve for Chrome.

Tamar Weinberg posted stats from the Search Engine Roundtable blog showing 6.87% of visitors were using the Chrome browser. At Search Engine Land, Barry Schwartz posted stats showing 10.10% of all visitors using Chrome. Michael Arrington’s stats from TechCrunch showed 6.23% of all visits came from Chrome users. Topping all, Matt Cutts reported 19.44% of visitors to his blog showed Chrome as their browser. (all stats from September 4)

The outpouring of stats showing a high adoption rate for Chrome prompted Enquisite’s president Richard Zwicky to take a look at the data generated by four random consumer orientated websites using Enquisite’s Analytics suite. He found a very different set of statistics.

On September 4, (the same date reports from several search marketing blogs put Chrome adoption above 5%), Enquisite reported only 2.01% of 932,465 page-views came from Chrome users. The data suggests that the tech and search marketing community are likely to be early adopters of new technologies but the experience within the search marketing community does not necessarily reflect general user behaviours.
