SMX East and a highly special day

Written on October 7, 2008 – 7:38 am | by admin |

Three days from now one of the most exciting search marketing conferences of the year, SMX east opens in New York City. I am privileged to be attending the show as part of the WebmasterRadio crew and, of course, as a proud representative of Metamend Search Marketing.

Search Marketing Expo is the conference series started and coordinated by Danny Sullivan, Chris Sherman and Third Door Media. Danny is considered one of the “grandfathers” of search marketing and has one of the most loyal followings of anyone in technology. The shows he coordinates tend to be amazing.

The blogging might be a bit light next week. Search marketing conferences are 20-hour a day affairs and the schedule for SMX East is packed from early morning to late evening every day. Nevertheless, there is going to be a number of fascinating people, technologies, ideas and events throughout the coming days.

WebmasterRadio.fm will have a live feed from the floor of the convention and will likely be broadcasting certain keynote speakers and presentations. If you can’t make it to New York next week, listen in for live coverage. If you are in the area next week, registration for SMX East is still available online and at the door. It is a convention and conference you don’t want to miss.

On a personal note, this week also marks an important milestone for me. The next time I write in this space, (assuming nothing major happens between now and then), I will be 40. I celebrate my 40th birthday on Sunday! I’ve never had a 40th birthday before and am not likely to have another in this lifetime so I am hoping Sunday is going to be special. I suspect it will be a special day given I will be surrounded by some of the smartest people in technology, most of whom I consider good friends.

40 feels so strange to write and even stranger to contemplate. I certainly don’t feel middle-aged. Perhaps working in search has kept me feeling younger than I actually am. There is never a dull moment in this career and always something new and extraordinary to learn about. Thanks to everyone who has been part of my career, especially my co-workers and my readers.

To my co-workers both current and past… You’re the best and I owe all of you everything. I can only hope to return the favours, education and support sometime in my life.

To my readers… Wow. I can hardly believe you’ve stuck with my words all these years. I try hard to write well and to keep up to date and am proud of the work I’ve done but the support and love I’ve received over these years has been beyond what any writer in this space can ever expect. Thank you so very much.
