Paris, France (PRWEB) June 18, 2008 — On the opening day of the Domainer Meeting, the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) announced that, in cooperation with EuroDNS, it will establish a sister organization in Europe. Internet Commerce Association-Europe (ICA-EU) will be headquartered in Luxembourg to better represent its members with the EU Parliament and agencies located in Brussels, the European Court located in Luxembourg, and the separate governments of the nations of Europe.

ICA’s is a non-profit trade association headquartered in Washington, DC. Its mission is to promote the benefits of the activities of professional domain name registrants (domainers), the individuals and companies that invest in and develop domain names, as well as the companies that serve them through the provision of various services. It seeks to preserve the entrepreneurial environment of the Internet that has made it such an innovative and high-growth arena for commerce in the U.S., Europe and worldwide.

Domainers’ internet investments are challenged by a number of competing interests, including trademark owners that would like to more readily obtain the transfer of valuable domain names by changing the laws and policies that govern trademark disputes in the EU and its separate states, the U.S., and under the process established by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for the resolution of domain name disputes. Some governments are also advocating policies that would threaten the owners of valuable geo-domains, while others seek to censor internet content including domain name content. Domainers often invest large sums of money to purchase and develop their domains and require a stable and fair legal and policy environment to protect those investments. ICA and ICA-EU will work coordinate their activities to explain and promote the interests of their members to national governments, the EU, ICANN, and all other relevant policy-making bodies.

Many of the policy decisions affecting domainers are made by ICANN, which is tasked with policy making for generic top level domains (gTLD) such as .com, .org and .net. While gTLDs are the most dominant form in the U.S.,, , country code TLDs (ccTLD) such as .de and .uk are more commonly used in European e-commerce and much of the policy decisions that affect European domainers are made by the ccTLD managers. With its headquarters in Europe, ICA-EU will be able to better represent the interests of European domainers with the ccTLD managers and national governments of the continent. The establishment of ICA-EU also recognizes that the Internet is a global platform for communications and commerce and that domainers must adopt an international approach to promoting and protecting their shared interests.

Jeremiah Johnston, ICA President, states, “This is a big step for ICA as it reaches out to fulfill its worldwide mission. EuroDNS has been actively involved with multiple European governments and ccTLD managers effecting legislative and policy issues over the last several years. ICA is happy to have EuroDNS assuming a leadership role in the establishment of ICA-Europe. We hope that ICA-Europe is the first of what will eventually be many sister organizations. There has already been interest expressed from Latin America in another regional organization based there.”

Xavier Buck, EuroDNS CEO, says, “EuroDNS is excited to help expand ICA into Europe. We saw what ICA was able to do about the Snowe Bill in the US Senate, at ICANN, and with US Department of Commerce. We knew that EuroDNS could help them in their work here. All of us want to see the Internet remain a place where entrepreneurs can thrive”

ICA-EU expects to begin operations by early fall and to have a website in multiple European languages. ICA will include links from its current website at InternetCommerce.org to ICA-EU’s website when it is published.

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Videos shared on YouTube and blogs scrutinizing candidates are part of an Internet-age revolution shaking up the US presidential election and sweeping in a new political era.

“Voter-generated content” is credited with helping Senator Barack Obama secure the Democratic presidential nomination.

It is also said to be transforming the essence of US political campaigns and shifting power from party leaders and major media outlets to citizens with camera-enabled mobile phones or simple blogging tools.

“You’re watching the battle between politics of the 20th Century and politics of the 21st Century,” said Andrew Rasiej, founder of the Personal Democracy Forum devoted to exploring how technology is changing politics.

“The battle of old-school or top-down political organizing and the one that believes in bottom-up. You are seeing a fundamental power shift; the Internet allows people to organize themselves.”

Obama’s announcement that he will rely on individual donors instead of public campaign funding is cited as proof of the Internet’s political power.

More than 1.5 million people have donated cash to his effort.

“That shatters all records and has a lot to do with people being mobilized online, and mostly in the blogosphere,” said Mother Jones magazine reporter Josh Harkinson, who tracks “digital democracy” and blogging.

“Weighing in, sharing your political views and donating money are much easier online than ever before.”

Blogs keep people engaged and those who feel connected to campaigns are inclined to give money to influence outcomes, Harkinson said.

The rise of blogging and voter-posted videos also holds danger for candidates, whose every comment and move can be captured and shared online by anyone with a camera phone and basic Internet skills.

Gone are cozy relationships that might result in reporters giving candidates chances to retract or clarify embarrassing or controversial remarks.

“Bloggers have pressure on them to be controversial and different,” said Kevin Wallsten, a California university political science professor writing a book on the role blogging plays in presidential politics.

“The new thing for candidates is you have to be on your game all the time. You can have a Macaca Moment or a Bittergate.”

Google Trends (now available in the google.ca domain as well) has been interesting for what it can indicate about a topic by picking up search trends for keywords. Now it will analyse a site domain. But you have to run a keyword search first, and then select Websites from the results set. (Odd design).

“Google Trends, a service Google started two years ago to track searched-for keywords, has unveiled a new tool for inquiring minds looking to find out more on any given site. Like tracking services Compete and Alexa which use tool bars to grab user data, Google Trends now lets you pop in specific domains and compare basic traffic information about any .com site (or .tv, .biz, .net, and so on) using nothing more than organic user searches.”

For keywords, see activity on “cap and trade”, “carbon tax”.

For site, try the site for the Environment Canada - www.ec.gc.ca. The analysis of also visited or also searched for hasn’t a whiff of global warming, climate change, or carbon tax.

Also - Google Trends Comes To Web Sites: Trends For Web Sites - Barry Schwartz, Search Engine Land (Jun 20)

Points out how SEMs might use Google Trends on websites for getting keywords. But can also be used to find similar sites.

Explains how Google gets this data — “One thing you should keep in mind is that this tool basis its data off Google search data, aggregated opt-in anonymous Google Analytics data, opt-in consumer panel data, and other third-party market research. In addition, the search volume numbers are estimates and Google only shows ten search phrases for a domain name.”

Sri Lanka’s junior ruggerites are in for treat over the next one month. Gordonstoun School which happens to have one of the best rugby teams in England and Wales, will arrive on June 28 for a 14 day rugby and sight seeing tour. They will be followed by another top school from the same region in the form of Bancroft College who will touch down on July 22 for an eight day tour. Bancroft by the way is bringing both their first 15 and second 15 teams to tour the island.

“Both schools wanted to cancel their respective tours to Sri Lanka following the spate of bomb attacks. But I spoke to the school authorities and parents and managed to convince them otherwise. In fact they finally said ‘bombs or no bombs we will come’. What is disappointing for me is that some of the top schools declined to play citing the league season.” , said organizer of the tour and well known sports promoter Tony Opatha to The Sunday Times.

“These schools should look at the bigger picture. After one or two years, the boys will leave and when they start playing club rugby few if any, will get a chance like this. In addition this year Sri Lanka will be competing in the Youth Asiad and this would have been an ideal opportunity for Sri Lanka’s best to press for selection. Keep in mind that everything is sponsored. continued Opatha.

“The reason why I want to promote rugby is simple. The schools are the feeder system for clubs and then the national grid. Thirty years ago we used to have 15 teams competing for the club league crown. Now it is limited to two or three clubs. After the top Colombo schools declined I issued an open invitation to which St. Anthony’s Kandy, Dharmaraja, Vidyartha. Lumbini, Prince of Wales to name a few responded and we have already scheduled the fixtures for those schools.”

“What I would really love to see is a combined team from Colombo and the same from the Central Province taking on these schools,” said Opatha in conclusion.

Opatha may just get his wish. Chairman of the Rugby Development Committee at Isipatana Hassan Singhawansa said; “We are currently negotiating to arrange matches against these schools by a Colombo combined 15, Central Province 15 and also Isipatana.

“So Europe speaks up in this sense, and is fighting for the freedom of speech and the freedom to receive the news,” she said.

Her comments to the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Singapore came after she was asked what concerns she had about freedom of expression in Asia.

China maintains some of the strictest Internet censorship in the world with its “Great Firewall” regularly blocking any kind of information or content that the ruling communist party views as improper, unhealthy or anti-China.

An activist said in Tokyo yesterday that Chinese censorship of the Internet and restrictions on reporting have worsened despite Beijing’s pledge to improve media freedom ahead of the August Olympic Games.

China has actually tightened control of the Internet as the Olympics approaches, said Zhang Yu, a member of the Independent Chinese PEN Centre, a branch of International PEN, a writers’ association.

You can watch his quest to win the French Grand Prix, despite being saddled with a 10-place grid penalty, live online via the ITV.com website.

As well as the race, you can see live coverage of the qualifying session and Friday’s two practice sessions.

The first practice session begins at 0900BST on Friday, and the second session is at 1300BST. Each lasts one-and-a-half hours.

The qualifying session is on Saturday at 1300BST and the race will begin at 1300BST on Sunday.

Poland’s Robert Kubica leads the standings after winning in Canada. Hamilton crashed into championship rival Kimi Raikkonen in the pit lane in Canada ending the race for both drivers.

The crash means Hamilton will start the race no higher than eleventh, as he was punished with a ten-place penalty for hitting the Ferrari while it waited at a red light.
